Principal Accountant, University Administration

Department-Specific Responsibilities
- Responsible for providing unit monitoring and oversight to mitigate financial compliance risk for IU in all aspects of financial, accounting, and controls compliance, as required by the Office of the University Controller (UCO).
- Performs accounting and compliance activities on behalf of the unit.
- Ensures unit-level accountability, compliance and controls for financial activity as defined in university policy and the IU Accounting Standards.
- Acts as the unit-level liaison to UCO for all financial, accounting and controls compliance, including financial systems and reporting.
- Provides unit support for the development and execution of compliance initiatives of UCO as part of UCO strategic planning.
- Conducts quarterly unit financial analysis and closing material preparation in support of external financial and executive-level reporting.
- Facilitates Internal Audit action/clean-up for financial items, as needed.
- Provides external audit support requests, as required.
- Provides unit support for special accounting projects, as needed.
- Provides unit support for the implementation of institutional financial efficiencies.
- Provides training and development for the unit on any of the items within the scope of tactical job responsibilities.
General Responsibilities
- Applies Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP).
- Performs more complex accounting assignments requiring advanced professional experience, knowledge, and competency in accounting principle and practices to safeguard the organization's financial resources and ensure compliance with all relevant regulations, laws, and reporting requirements.
- Establishes and maintains accounting policies and controls, fiscal controls, and financial reports.
- Prepares, reviews, and provides interpretation of complex reports and analyses for manager and officers.
- Submits recommendations for improved operations.
- Oversees and assists with specialized accounting assignments such as the preparation of monthly, quarterly, and annual financial activity.
- Provides work leadership to lower-level accounting employees.

This role requires the ability to effectively communicate and to operate a computer and other standard office productivity equipment. The position involves sedentary work as well as periods of time moving around an office environment and the campus. The person in this role must be able to perform the essential functions with or without an accommodation.

This position is eligible for remote work or to work a hybrid schedule (mix between remote and in-person work), subject to change based on university policy and business needs.
$85,000 - $90,000 annually, depending upon qualifications
